However, the first large unit will take around 5 years to become operational. I know about the maintainance issues in Puerto Rico but I overcame them in a small chemical plant that I build during the 1970's. Also, all the pharmaceutical plants are well maintained as are may other facilities and buildings.

Internationalist ... By: t4705mb6. on 24 Jun 08, 22:14:01 Internationalist investors don't like wind/solar energy(Cheney HATES them!),they favor wind power over solar because it can be worked onto the "grid". At first, few people would have their own wind turbines. Their big fear is that, once these sources of energy evolve, self contained units will take people off the energy circuit, dratically lowering profits.
Investors support nuclear, gas, oil and coal. Anything that can be served to the public from a central point for a set fee...owned by them.

Does rural Michigan ... By: seshkanuri. on 20 Dec 06, 16:19:06 Does rural Michigan have a different wind profile from the rest of the country? Like ground level turbulant winds? Then this may be a good design for such places. Otherwise the russian design (Lenz type or pure Darrieus type) is more efficient than Bil Becker's design. Bil's design is more attractive for urban areas like roof tops of buildings, where efficiency is not the key requirement but space is the constraint.

These are "scientists" when they can't figure out that the effect of adding CO2 to the atmosphere on global warming is ZERO? The electromagnetic absorption of CO2 in the infrared band is extremely narrow. Within those tiny bands CO2 is opaque, absorbing all energy within a few yards of the emitter. SO - ADDING CO2 TO THE ATMOSPHERE DOESN'T CHANGE ITS GREENHOUSE PROPERTIES. Water on the other hand - absorbs EVERY wavelength across the IR band.

question: there are any other areas in Puerto Rico were this plant can be built? did you recommended the construction in 100 mw plant or bigger? how much percentage will this plant replace of the actual kw on the hole island?

PREPA has announced that it is reviewing an OTEC proposal and perhaps will be making an announcement soon. However, the first large unit will take around 5 years to become operational. I know about the maintainance issues in Puerto Rico but I overcame them in a small chemical plant that I build during the 1970's. Also, all the pharmaceutical plants are well maintained as are may other facilities and buildings.

I don't see anything on OTEC.
By: TJPlocek. on 05 Nov 08, 15:40:07
The units are more expensive than conventional but have no fuel cost. Each 100 MW unit would save 1.3 million barrels of oil each year and has a useful life of over 30 years. The 800 million kWh is over the course of a year.

Cold deep water is continually generated in Artic and Antartic Oceans and flows as described in the video. It is continuously pumped to the heat exchangers using part of the electricity generated. Life span is expected to be over 25 years with routine maintainence. Corrosion resistant alloys and mild methods to prevent bioaccumulation of barnacles and other sea life have been developed.

A cable to shore is much less expensive than hydrogen generation for initial near shore OTEC units.
By: WOLFMAN1469. on 14 Sep 08, 02:48:57
Few question i have about the system. using your graphical design as a reference, wouldnt the cold water need to be continuosly pumped up from the depths? how would you maintain the flow and the tempature of the water? what is the expected life span and maintainence cost of the equipment seeing that the salt water creates a highly crosive enviroment and what are the effects OF barnicles or ON other sea life
By: FlorinL68. on 05 Sep 08, 16:55:20

OTEC is one of the safest power systems. A comparison of various power systems is in our recent presentation to CIAPR posted on our offinf web site. The primary disadvantage is the high initial cost, but if they are made in Puerto Rico, this will create large numbers of good jobs.
By: the13joker. on 12 Aug 08, 20:52:33
i support OTEC.
By: the13joker. on 12 Aug 08, 20:32:40
A question to JTPlocek. Is it safer for the eviroment? does it produce any harm to the oceans at all? What are the disadvantages of this systems? and whe will it be implemented in Puerto Rico?
By: starwarsgeek8. on 26 Jul 08, 04:08:58
But it will become more and more competitive as natural gas and coal prices inevitably go up, up, up, and away (after all is depleted)
By: BikiniBabe1985. on 23 Jul 08, 04:57:57
If it generates byproduct desalinated water then it definitely will be implemented. Our civilization has clearly demonstrated that we do not know how to sustain fresh water sources through aquifers and rivers
