It is a solar cell, the reason you try and get that cuprous oxide is because it is a semiconductor, just like the silicon in normal solar cells. However, this semiconductor is very inefficient and is like 10 times worse than silicon. In reality, any semiconductor can be used to produce electricity. Hopefully more can be found so we can build these more easily.

There *are* reasons why this is too expensive and/or impractical. Fueling stations would have to be retrofit, and pumping H2 is not like pumping gasoline. Home H2 generation would tax the grid. California already browns out during the Summer. Home solar installs cost as much as a car. Alternative fuels will replace gasoline some day, but the economics haven't pushed us yet.

willoolner: Well what they're saying is that it's an extra step. You can use solar panels to charge a battery that you put inside the car and this will run your motor. That's what some car manufacturers are trying to do. Having a hydrogen step in between is merely losing energy on the way (electrolysis produces heat which dissipates into the surrounding air, and must be cooled). More interesting is trying to run the whole car on solar energy (more efficient solar panels, wiring, etc).

Fortunately for me, I am a student of mechanical engineering and i can see where the real problem is. Hydrogen is safe, its as safe as CNG, if not more. Secondly the only issue in this all is efficient production of hydrogen. We don't need more electricity, we only need more hydrogen and more fuel cells, ,which is a one time investment by the way. My final year project is on this, and wish me luck, we'll soon have plenty of hydrogen! :-)

Also solar power is very expensive due to volume (large panels needed, lots of them) and solar panels are also expensive to produce (and the by-products more harmful to the environment than burning coal/gas). That's why city lights, factories etc aren't powered by sun power.. The best "solar generators" are in fact plants' chlorophyll, which create carbon bonds to hold up their structure. Bio-matter compressed over years by weight and sedimentation is called coal or oil - the best saved sunlight

Sorry there, that car is made of plastic filled with air, when scaling to real car size you don't scale just weight linearly, but due to the problems of materials losing strength, a lot more hydrogen would be needed to push a 2-3 ton car (with passengers, seats, brakes, suspension, etc.) so you would need a lot more hydrogen and electricity(and minimize car size) Also, storing and moving hydrogen is highly dangerous.. any crash and your car could easily explode (pipe/tank leak)

The fact that the "hydrogen fueling station" can be run on solar power does not negate the fact that it still requires more energy to convert h2o to h2 than you can get from converting the hydrogen back into water. Both activities are lossy and energy is wasted in both processes. If this actually worked, it would violate the second law of thermodynamics. Still, you can't deny that the toy is a freaking cool application of science!

try hooking you wind turbine up to a bike in onne of the highest gears. that way in a very high wind storm the wind mill will spin slowwer but still pro duce the same amoutn of power. This will be safer and better on the axel.

Buy the blades? Why not just carve them yourself its cheap, you could do it for less than 20$ U.S. if you have a saw, a chisel and a hammer. As for why I didn't use the alternator. . . There are approx. 20 important variables that go into choosing a generator for a wind turbine. I simply don't understand how to optimize my design to accommodate an alternator. Your question is not simple. But perhaps you could do some experimentation and share with me the benefits of an alternator. Thanks
